Color Theory
For me color evokes emotion. That is why I love pops of color in my home and spaces I design for my clients. Bright pops of color can evoke joy & happiness. Muted colors can evoke a sense of calm. Dark colors evoke….well, moodiness. Good or bad. I honestly, can say there really isn’t a color that I don’t like or appreciate. I want to encourage you not to be afraid of color. Why play it safe? Now I know there was a huge trend within the last 10 years to be neutral. Hence, the coined color, greige. Don’t get me wrong, I love me a neutral and its sophistication, but I think there’s something to be said for NOT playing it safe everywhere. Take a neutral space, add little bursts of color, like orange or emerald green. How, you ask? Take a cue from nature. Add flowers in a vase. Take a walk around your yard and cut branches to place into a vase. It doesn’t have to be expensive. Most Supermarkets, these days, sell extremely affordable bouquets. Some of mine have lasted for over two weeks! A total bargain. And I get such joy looking at them. If you are not into flowers and caring for them….. head to your local brick and mortar store and get some toss pillows you can change out seasonally. Yet another inexpensive way to change up a space. Still not sure? Here is an interior designer tip for you………If you want to take it slow with color, chose Analogous colors. Which essentially means the variations within one color. So lets say you feel comfortable with blue. There is navy blue, light blue, cobalt blue, etc. These all work together harmoniously. So choose one, two, or three variations to add to your space. And if you are really ready to bust out with brighter more contrasting pops of color, you would want to do Complimentary colors. Complimentary colors, well, compliment each other. Like blue & orange or purple & yellow. All you have to do is Google the Color Wheel and its as simple as that. Start slow. Ease into it. See what colors evoke emotion inside of you.
